A short history

Since this Blogspot is new I will try and fill in a very brief history before starting a series of new frequent updates. The CYE website cye.org.uk provides a lot of history up to the fitting out stage and please have a look at that. Information on fitting out has been a bit sparse so hopefully this will fill in that gap somewhat.

We went out to tender to several companies but finally selected Trimline of Southampton. They are experienced ship and superyacht fitters and have some land building experience too. The have a large workforce and have a reputation for quality of work which is proving to be the case.

Fitting out started in earnest in June and one of the first jobs was to fit the insulation and most of the wiring. The photo shows wires hanging everywhere. There are wires for lights, wires for power, wires for data transmission and wires for fire alarm system.

Then came the panelling stage. These were all cut to fit perfectly, with boxes round the portholes and the windows all made back at Trimline’s factory in Southampton. Photo will show some panelling.

Plumbing was started with pipes for hot and cold water, pipes for evacuation of waste water and large plastic piles for the ventilation system. You can probably identify some of this in the photo.

There were workmen everywhere on some days. Trimline employed specialist subcontractors, selected by us and this was all coordinated by Trimline’s site manager with weekly co-ordination meetings to ensure Project Management. Trimline have a strict control of safety and risk assessment and every worker who comes on the ship has to use a swipe card which gets recorded on computer.

Quite a bit of welding and steel cutting was involved at this stage, in order to get the pipes and wires through the right places in the lower deck. We controlled the welding work direct and had to get Hot Work permits to ensure that there was acceptable risk against fire.
